BILBAO Ría 2000
The urban regeneration of Metropolitan Bilbao has evoked undeniable interest among urban planning and architecture professionals. References to Bilbao’s transformation are now commonplace in professional forums in these disciplines.
Within this collective task, the work of BILBAO Ría 2000 has received important awards and recognition.
The magazine “Capital” presented the “Capital Bilbao” awards on 12 February 2013 to showcase Bilbao as an example of inspiration for urban transformation and to pay tribute to the dynamism, innovation and industrial vocation of companies in Bilbao and Bizkaia BILBAO Ría 2000 received the Urban Transformation Award for the project or institution that has most contributed to the modernisation of Bilbao.
As part of the 2012 Sports Gala, held on 27 December, the Bizkaia Sports Press Association (APDB) organised an event to recognise the institutions that have contributed to the recovery of the Estuary environment “to the point of turning it into a new sports stadium” in Bilbao. The entities that received a trophy for this reason were the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium, the Basque Water Agency and BILBAO Ría 2000.
The International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) awarded one of its four Excellence Awards to BILBAO Ría 2000, in the “Urban Planning” category, for its work in urban regeneration in the Urban-Galindo area (Barakaldo). The award was presented in Nairobi as part of the 46th ISOCARP Congress, attended by over 700 delegates from around the world.
BILBAO Ría 2000 was chosen as the best Basque company of 2006 in the tenth edition of the awards given annually by the magazine “Mundo Empresarial Europeo”. The jury highlighted the work in the “urban recovery of land of previous industrial use that has enabled emblematic actions to be undertaken”. The award was presented by the Minister for Industry, Joan Clos.
The Spanish Association for the Management of Urban Centres (AGECU) gave BILBAO Ria 2000 the award for the Best Intervention in an Urban Centre as an example of public-private collaboration and for favouring the urban transformation of Bilbao and its metropolitan environment. The awards ceremony took place in Bilbao on 22 June.
In commemoration of its 20th anniversary, the company DZ Centro de Diseño, under the Department of Innovation and Economic Promotion of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, agreed to give this award to BILBAO Ría 2000 “For its work in favour of design
Awarded for “the boost given to the transformation of the City and its metropolitan area through inter-institutional cooperation, creativity and the search for excellence in urban planning and architecture” which has led “IsoCaRP to consider BILBAO Ría 2000 as a key factor in Bilbao’s transition towards the creative economy.
Awarded by the CÓDICE publishing group. It was presented by the Minister for Housing, María Antonia Trujillo, and awarded in the “Best Overall Performance” category for “urban development for recovering degraded areas” and for “the active commitment of all the organisations involved in BILBAO Ría 2000”.
Awarded to BILBAO Ría 2000 by the Head of the Basque Government, Juan José Ibarretxe. Awarded for the collaboration between the different agents that make up the Company, “for the work performed to make Bilbao what it is today and because they continue to work to improve the city.

Awarded by the European Council of Town Planners
Award for the OAVS operation (Abandoibarra, Ametzola, Variante Sur ferroviaria) in the Local Urban Regeneration Plans section. For the “exceptional strategy that this complex transformation has entailed” and for “the method carried out in its implementation (which) is an example for many other European transformation projects”.
Biennial Special Jury Award for the Regeneration of the banks of the Estuary “Industrial Banks – Urban Banks”. For the “correct articulation of progress and recovery of the riverbank” … and … the “adequate definition and completion of the milestones of each phase of the work, which has led to a high quality recovery of the old industrial areas”.
Award in the design category for the “IGNIUX enclosure for the Bilbao-Abando station” For the “optimal constructive solution to provide the adequate urban image that, without any aggressiveness, acts as an enclosure”.
Special mention in the Urban Planning category for the Redevelopment of the Marzana, La Merced and Urazurrutia docks. For “the successful treatment of the intervention on an urban scale”.
Special mention in the planning modality for the Modification of elements of the Barakaldo General Plan, referring to the Galindo East Area of the URBAN/Galindo area., For “the intelligence demonstrated in the reformulation of objectives [ ] in order to obtain, as a final result, a new fragment of a high quality urban city”.
City, Urban Planning and Ecology Award for the Avenida del Ferrocarril. For “its urban significance in the Bilbao global renovation strategy and having repaired a historical debt”.
For “the urban regeneration work carried out by BILBAO Ría 2000 and for its contribution to the CITIES project”.
Special Jury Award for the development planned for Abandoibarra.
