Actions
This traditional and historic district of Bilbao had suffered considerable social and urban deterioration in recent decades and in order to reintegrate it into the city the City Council launched a Regeneration Plan, in collaboration with the Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.
BILBAO Ría 2000 collaborated in this initiative by developing several urban regeneration projects aimed at improving and expanding the connections of this neighbourhood near the Old Town. These actions were financed with part of the capital gains obtained from the sale of plots of land in Abandoibarra.
The work carried out by BILBAO Ría 2000 led to improved connections with the city centre thanks to the extension of Cantalojas bridge, turning it into a square that has become a new meeting place for the neighbourhood’s residents. The complete renovation of the Plaza del Corazón de María, discovering and highlighting the historical heritage of an old monastery that was buried there, which has contributed great added value to the neighbourhood’s cultural facilities. And, finally, it has led to an increase in the educational offer with the construction of the Miribilla Public School.”
