Underground routing of the Adif line in Rekalde and Irala

The underground routing of the Adif Ancho Métrico line on its way through Basurto was continued with the freight section that ran overground in the Rekalde and Irala districts. During the work, the transit of trains was not suspended, so an alternative route had to be created.

The work was carried out using two techniques: a false tunnel in the first section (from Gordóniz Bridge to Plaza Eskurtze) and a mine tunnel ending in the La Peña district.

Following this action, financed under a Collaboration Agreement between the Ministry of Development, Adif (initially Feve), Bilbao City Council, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and BILBAO Ría 2000, the entire former Feve line, now Adif – passenger and freight – runs underground between Olabeaga and La Peña.
