Actions
The Urban-Galindo Operation, initiated in 1998, aims to bring Barakaldo closer to the water front, through the recovery of an area of more than 600,000 square metres of land that for years was occupied by the steel industry. Most of this land was handed over to BILBAO Ría 2000 by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, which is one of the institutions present on its Board of Directors.
This action is still in progress and BILBAO Ría 2000 continues working to complete the urbanisation and rehabilitation of the environment in accordance with the projects and plans established.
In Urban-Galindo the city extends to meet the water, in this case representing a true widening of the urban area, where a large part of the planned housing has already been built and where there are also economic and industrial buildings, a business centre, sports facilities and large green and leisure areas.
Through this urban development operation, the barriers that had prevented Barakaldo from occupying the predominant role it deserves due to its central and strategic location in the metropolitan area of Bilbao have been gradually eliminated.
The construction of a second riverside park in the area around the Estuary -the first one was built next to the Galindo river- is BILBAO Ría 2000’s next challenge, for which it has called a Competition for Ideas for its development.
